Spider-man coming at you in 3D

Posted by Fernando On February - 11 - 2010

The untitled Spider-man movie, scheduled for summer 2012, will be shown in 3D. This movie will be a reboot for the franchise, with Marc Webb ( quite a fortuitous name) at the helm of this new take on this now almost 50 year old story.  Jeff Blake, Chairman of Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing & Distribution, declared today:

“Spider-Man is the ultimate summer movie-going experience, and we’re thrilled the filmmakers are presenting the next installment in 3D. Spider-Man is one of the most popular characters in the world, and we know audiences are eager and excited to discover Marc’s fantastic vision for Peter Parker and the franchise.”

Mike Webb has previously worked on (500) days of summer and directed Ashlee Simpson’s Boyfriend. Brace for quirkiness.

Bill Murray IS a Ghost in Ghostbusters 3!

Posted by Jack On February - 9 - 2010

You may remember a while back when Sigourney Weaver hinted that Bill Murray will be a ghost in the third Ghostbusters film. Well, it turns out she’s correct as Bill Murray confirmed this to MailOnline!

“I’ll come back in Ghostbusters III only if I get to be a ghost. I said to them, ‘I’ll do it if you kill me off in the first reel.’ So now they are going to have me as a ghost in the film.”

So being a ghost tempted Bill Murray to return for the second sequel. The movie is said to be filming this year so this year we should be finding out a lot more about the movie.

Captain America Update from Joe Johnston!

Posted by Jack On February - 7 - 2010

Joe Johnston spoke to a number of websites at an event to promote his new film, The Wolfman, and he gave some new information about the upcoming The First Avenger: Captain America. The summary is that they will definately cast an American who is fairly unknown, he will shoot in HD and it will be cast by March 1!

Question: How is pre-production going on Captain America and are you planning on casting an American?
Joe Johnston: Absolutely. Oh yeah. I don’t think we could make without an American playing the part. But we may not be casting in America because we’re going to London and we’ll probably shoot in the UK for most of it because it takes place in Europe. But, yeah, we’ll definitely be casting.

Question: Was there ever any talk about Wolfman being in 3D and is there any talk about Captain America in 3D?
Joe Johnston: No, we’re shooting Captain America in HD. But you can take any film now and make it 3D. We’re not going to be shooting it specifically to be 3D, but this is the first film I will have shot in high def and I think it’s one of the first’s Shelly will shoot in high def too, it’ll be a new experience for both of us. And it gives you a lot of flexibility in post which I learned from Walter Murch…when you shoot a movie in high def if you want to zoom in 200% you can. But in film you can only go 15 or 20% at most before you start seeing grain and degradation. In high def you can basically reshoot the film in post – if you want to – so I’m looking forward to trying that.

Joe Johnston also confirmed that the villain will be Red Skull and commented on how the movie will be shot.

Question: With Captain America, do you see opportunities to bring an auteur style to it like Sam Raimi did to Spider-Man and the different Batman directors?
Joe Johnston: We’re definitely going to shoot it in a different way than any of the other Marvel pictures have been shot. What I’m trying to do is look at the comics – most of the new ones like the Brubaker series – and to interpret that sort of visual style into a film in a way that I think has been tried before…it always looks a little too on the nose it looks like oh they’re shooting a comic book movie. I want to try something a little bit different.

Considering this was a press event for The Wolfman, Joe did give some information on the DVD release of The Wolfman. He said that an additional 17 minutes will be added, and that it was originally cut because the studio told him to speed up the first act.

Captain America Casting Soon and Filming in the UK!

Posted by Jack On February - 4 - 2010

Director Joe Johnston spoke to Sci Fi Wire about his upcoming film, The First Avenger: Captain America.

“We need to cast it soon,” Johnston said. “We have a very short list, but we’re still juggling actors here. I’d say within the next couple of weeks we’ll have ourselves a Captain America, I hope.”

He also said that him and his team are getting ready to film in the United Kingdom.

Shooting won’t start until the end of June, he said, “but we’re getting ready to go to the U.K., it looks like.”

Joe Johnston discussed what he liked about Captain America, saying he’s not a comic-book fan.

“It’s the kind of thing where, while I’m not necessarily a comic-book fan, I think the interesting thing about this guy is that he’s a superhero without any superpowers, basically. He is the epitome of human perfection. He can’t fly and throw tanks around and see through walls and things like that, but he’s strong and runs fast.”

Captain America is said to be filming this year and is scheduled for a July 22, 2011 release. If I can find out exactly where they will be filming in the UK, I will try my best to fly up. I had wanted to fly up and get on the set of The Wolfman, but I only found out they had filmed in the UK AFTER they had packed up. Let’s hope we hear some more information soon!

John Sayles working on a war film ‘Baryo’

Posted by Jack On February - 3 - 2010

ComingSoon got the word that Indy film maker John Sayles is working on a war film, called Baryo.

An anonymous source tipped us off to the fact they were involved with a movie in the Philippines and doing a bit of research, we discovered it was Sayles’ latest project Baryo, his fictionalized account of the Philippines-American War that took place between the countries at the turn of the century after two American privates killed three Filipino soldiers in a suburb of Manila. The incident turned into a bloody war that lasted two years as the Philippines Army used guerilla tactics to make up for being under-equipped to face the overwhelming American forces.

This should be an entertaining film to follow up to its release, so stay tuned for more information.

Joe Johnston talks Captain America!

Posted by Jack On January - 31 - 2010

FilmJournal spoke to Joe Johnston about The Wolfman and his upcoming Captain America.

“We’re in prep,” Johnston says. “Rick Heinrichs is production-designing and we’re set up down in Manhattan Beach [California]. It’s the part of the process that I love the most,” he enthuses. “We have eight or ten really talented artists, and we all just sit around all day and draw pictures and say, ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if we could do this?’ It’s that phase of the production where money doesn’t matter: ‘Let’s put all the greatest stuff up on the wall and [then later] see what we can afford.’” The film, he says at this early stage, will begin “in 1942, 1943″ during World War II. “The stuff in the ’60s and ’70s [comic books] we’re sort of avoiding. We’re going back to the ’40s, and then forward to what they’re doing with Captain America now.”

Captain America is filming this year and is set for a July 22, 2011 release. Let’s hope that release date doesn’t change; I’d like to hear some Jurassic Park 4 news soon!

Transformers 3 Update!

Posted by Bogdan On January - 27 - 2010

We’re not used to this amount of quiet time during the production of a Transformers movie. Usually at this point during the past two films we were spoiled with updates from Bay or the writers. There’s almost no info on the next movie except for two small posts by Bay on his official site. All we know now is that Shia Laboeuf and Megan Fox will be back along with director Michael Bay. The only change so far is on the writing side. Where the past two films had Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman in charge of screenwriting duties, the next installment will only be written by Ehren Kruger. He helped the duo write the second film and now has the solo duty of writing the third film. Here’s the new update from Bay followed by his prior post:

“Busy scouting – Chicago, Detroit, and Washington D.C. for Transformers last week. Things are going well. The script is feeling very different from the other two. I ended my scout down in Miami this weekend to load my plane with 14 Florida Surgeons, specialists in various fields and flew them down to Haiti. We then returned with a planeload of a team of exhausted Miami Fire rescue. It is proving very difficult for these volunteers to get back home.”

Earlier update:

“There will be a nice crescendo ending,” Bay said. “It gets much more into the robot character. The last time you kind of met a few of the robots; this time you’re gonna get a much cooler landscape.”
