Drew McWeeny from HitFix (who reviewed the William Monahan & John Sayles Jurassic Park 4 script back in 2004) got a chance to speak to Joe Johnston regarding the fourth movie. Joe confirmed that the old script is not being used and that they have a new idea.
Drew: Is that still in the offing, or have you moved on now to a new idea?
Joe: We have. There is an idea now for number four that is different from the first three, and that is more or less the beginning of a new trilogy, in that it sends the whole franchise off in a new direction. It’s not about the dinosaur park anymore. It’s about all-new characters. So Steven’s busy right now with the stuff he’s doing and I’ve got to do “Captain America,” but hopefully afterwards, we’ll find time to develop it. And really… it’s something different that we haven’t seen before in the “Jurassic Park” world.
It sounds very exciting, and we can only hope it develops after Captain America. Joe did go on to say that Spielberg is busy with other projects but he does indeed want this to happen.
Drew: I’m sorry we won’t see the Sayles/Monahan idea.
Joe: Well, you know, Universal and Steven will want to keep making these movies as long as they’re successful, and who knows? We may see the Monahan/Sayles version come back.
This is fantastic news for all Jurassic Park fans, and people who generally like the franchise.

“I’m sorry”? Who the hell would feel sorry for that idea not getting done? Mutant dinosaurs that I’ve personally named “Homocraptors” are NOT a good direction for a Jurassic Park film. A Dino Riders meaby but not Jurassic Park! So I’m afraid Drew somewhat underestimated that statement. The deal is, the Sayles idea stunk and should not be made. Ever…….

I don’t care until Universal says something. Not.. Johnston. He’s said so much and nothing has come of it. I want Universal Studios to say something. As for the mutant dinosaurs…
I’d SO go for that if it wasn’t attached to JP at all. I want raptors launching rockets and fighting raptormen.

Well Joe is the first step, once him and Spielberg have got things together and are actually ready to make the film, Universal will speak out.

I am not happy about this at ALL. New characters? no more Park? This isnt Jurassic Park anymore! I want to see Dr. Grant, trying to survive another dinosaur situation, not some strangers that might not even be dealing with Isla Nublar and Sorna! Im so upset! I personally believe they should make a JURASSIC PARK IV that fits in very well with the rest, a different storyline rather than Dr. Grant back on Isla Sorna, and make it the finale! That way, they can leave the JURASSIC PARK name, at a good place. Not creating another, fricken 10 more that god knows how it will continue, and what will happen. Anyone remember what hapened with JAWS? too many movies, and the origional story base killed the film. I do not want to see this happen with Jurassic Park, as its my ALL TIME favourite film. it has been since i was 2, and 13 years later it still is. If you know whats best, give this film a good ending. I dont want to see some new characters, at a new location.

If its not going to be attached to Isla Sorna/Nublar, and not with any of the original characters, dont call it JURASSIC PARK, because that will just bring shame to such a classic franchise.

Unless by new characters they mean, new dinosaurs, then im happy with this news!

Is that people do is complain? Jurassic park 4 has to leave the island. Im sure it might start there and develope elsewhere. But you could tell by Jurassic park 3, that they were out of idea’S to get people back there and useing the same scenery from the Lost World in there.
They said ”New Characters” doesnt mean Sam neil.john hammond, laura dern or Jeff Goldblum wont be in the film. Just means new important characters to help carry on the Trilogy.
I for 1 am glad to hear ”Jurassic park 4” is being developed and is finally taking place off the island. Also that Steven Spielberg is involved to some extent.
ALSO we dont even know the story, There are hundreds of thing’s they could do with Jurassic park, Maybe they’ll go back to the first island, recover DNA, or some kind of disease. I think we should wait until the story is better expressed before making any judgements.
Personally, Glad the dinos with guns was scrapped. They should call it ‘Dino-Riders” if thats the case. I’d pay to see that turned into a movie. Besides who doesnt want to see Tyrannosaurus Rex in 3D???? Or Raptors in 3d???? Which you know Jurassic park 4 will be done it.. Esp with Avatar type technology…
I say bring on ”Jurassic park 4” with open arms, I cant wait to hear more about it.

We’ve been waiting for eight years just to see this movie unfold so there’s a good reason to atleast expect an installment that isn’t trying to be a gimmick in order to impress us. That’s why some complain. Jurassic Park hasn’t been the best dinosaur concept for no reason.
I for one feel that “no islands” is just a silly excuse for another gimmick. It’s not in the setting but how you use it. The movie could have both an island plus other location and it would still work fine. Without an island there wouldn’t be dinosaurs surviving. I can accept another location as long as they don’t mess with the authenticity of the animals aka Homocraptor Saylensis/dino-human-dog hybrid. Seriously, it gives me the creeps to even hear Johnston saying “it might come back”. Call me a drama queen but I take the future of these films seriously just because of how much Crichton’s novel and the first movie kicks butt.

JPIV can suck for all I care, especially if Williams scores it. I’d kill for another Williams Jurassic Park score regardless of how bad JPIV is.

Well I knew they couldn’t stay on the islands forever. Even though I think they should stay there. Or at least a jungle atmosphere. The two things i wanted to see most in Jurassic Park is Pterosaurus and marine reptiles. We got pterosaurs in 2 and 3 now, so bring on the plesiosaurs and such.

Don’t support this shit. If it is Joe Johnston, it is going to be awful.
He likes the ‘mutated raptors with laser beams’ idea. Can’t you tell he is absolutely crazy?
And his films in history are Jumanji, The Pagemaster, and Honey I shrunk the kids.
And just look at how JP3 turned out. That isn’t because the series has no room for a sequel, it is because he is not a good director.
He chooses bad writers. Writers who have little to no experience, and what experience they have is with movies we all have never seen or heard of.
Fuck how much more obvious could it be. And the person saying they don’t mind 4 is Williams composes. It will probably be Don Davis again, doing the music.
Tell them no. If they are dumb enough to consider the “homocrapters with laserbeams”.. then they are definitely DEFINITELY not fit to make this movie..
Fuck 3D. Is it worth taking a massive shit on Jurassic Park 1?
If you want 3D, tell them to 3D-ize Jurassic Park 1.. not make a sequel in 3D by Joe Johnston.

Yes, JP3 stinks although it isn’t as bad as many would make it to be(as a popcorn movie). But it just doesn’t stand up to what Jurassic Park as a title should mean which is why it fails. I kinda blame the handling of The Lost World: Jurassic Park for this kind of direction. They had a great novel made just because they wanted Crichton to write it. Yet it was barely utilized at all, really just small scraps and bits that barely made the movie work. And I know this is because they actually wanted a novel that they could tear to several seperate chunks in order to make more sequels as they knew he wouldn’t make any more books. If Crichton had somehow written a third novel Spielberg’s The Lost World would have most likely been much more like it’s own respective novel. Damn Hollywood, merely covering the fact that they have lost touch. Their only true rule is to sell more merchandise at any cost. So I doubt “anything we haven’t seen before” is going to prove much yet.

People do know Joe Johnston didnt write Jurassic park 3? He did what he could with a bad script. If the director is given a piss poor script then expect a piss poor movie. It has nothing to do with the directors skill’s. I didnt like Jurassic park 3 but it wasnt all Joe johnstons fault.
Joe Johnston ALSO said He and ”Steven Speilberg” would be getting the story developed after Captain American. So ”Steven Spielberg IS involved” and Joe also said Steven wants to continue the Franchise. So it isnt just going to be joe johnston on this film. So quit your biching about ”No steven speilberg its Crap ordeal”
A trilogy is THE BEST way to go and ill explain my reasons for it. They have time to develop new characters unlike the one’s in JP3 that were stupid. But also like i said have new characters, Create an entire new story and take there time with it. Look at it this way.
It’s not going to be some 3 hour long bore-fest. Also isnt going to be some rushed film to make a conculsion, Better time to make an interesting story and to explain it out in detail, Build up new characters to carry on the movie. As joe said ”Take the film an entire different direction”…. I think thats the best way to go.
I’ll wait until i hear more about the story before making any real judgements, and i think everyone else should as well. It will NEVER be ”Jurassic park” it was a classic and will never be outdone, but that doesnt mean they cant make something good and worth watching.
Beside’s atleast they took there time with it, and there are NO dinos with guns. So atleast wait until we see what there going to do with Jurassic park 4 before screaming the words ”Wtf or Noo”
Besides we deserve a good dinosaur movie, its been a long while. We are very much over-due.

Jason, thank you. People don’t seem to understand that Joe was under huge amounts of pressure. He did what he could with the poor material he had.
He DID say Spielberg was involved, and the new idea is something that we all want, yet some people are way too negative to accept it. They complain about going back to the islands, and now we’re not, they still complain. Just wait and see how it develops.

I just can’t wait to hear some kind of confirmation ASAP! Between this and the Superman news, if everything moves up from here, 2010 should be a very good year!

I think we’ll hear some more during Captain America. Maybe 2011 we’ll hear Universal announce it!

I’m 13 and I LOVE Jurrassic Park. I don’t really get why Steven changed the charaters SO MANY FREAKING TIMES. Keep the cast the same. So that way, new viewers will know who’s who, and what’s what.
