A ‘Star Trek’ sequel is being talked about right now!

Posted by Travis On March - 31 - 2009

Ok so maybe it’s obvious that a franchise (or should I say ‘universe’) as big as ‘Star Trek’, which has already had several films and television shows over the years, would be prime consideration for a sequel. However, now it’s official that things are moving foreword; Paramount has hired Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman (who wrote the upcoming film ‘Star Trek’) and ‘Lost’ co-creator Damon Lindelof to write a screenplay for a posable ‘Star Trek’ sequel.

Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof spoke to Variety about the purposed sequel:

“There’s obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn’t even come out yet,” said Lindelof, co-creator with Abrams of ABC’s “Lost” who produced the upcoming “Trek” but did not contribute to Orci and Kurtzman’s screenplay. “But we’re so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed.”

As for potential storylines, Kurtzman stressed that the writing team will wait to take a cue from fan reaction about which direction to go.

“Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month,” he said. “With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We’ll be ambitious about what we’ll do.”

Paramount probably won’t green-light this project until the Monday after May 8th (Which is when ‘Star Trek’ hits theaters in most parts of the world). Ok, maybe not that fast but I can almost guarantee that if this film does well they’ll be fast tracking a sequel.

Post your thoughts below. How do you think ‘Star Trek’ is going to do opening weekend?

‘How to Train Your Dragon’

Posted by Travis On March - 26 - 2009

The first official image for Dreamworks Animation’s upcoming film: “How to Train Your Dragon” is now online.
How To Train Your Dragon first image

If your having trouble reading the text in the image it says: “‘How to Train Your Dragon’ is an adventure comedy set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, based on the book by Cressida Cowell. The story centers around a scrawny teenager, who lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. Initiation is coming and this is his one chance to prove his worthiness to his tribe and father. But when he encounters and ultimately befriends an injured dragon, his world is turned upside down.”

With this first image we also got the official synopsis.

“Meet Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, heir of the Viking chiefdom, but a boy with one very big problem: a hero he is not. “How to Train Your Dragon’ is the riotous story of Hiccup’s quest to hunt down the fiercest dragon, bring it into submission, and—hopefully—pass his initiation. Instead, he ends up with the smallest, most ornery dragon—it’s even toothless! Thus begins the hijinx of the world’s most lovable, unlikely hero and a most reluctant “beast.”

Anne Hathaway as Judy Garland

Posted by Travis On March - 24 - 2009

The Weinstein Co. has announced that Anne Hathaway is set to star as Judy Garland in an upcoming bio-pic. A writer and director have yet to be announced.

From the press release:

NEW YORK, NY (March 23, 2009) – Academy Award® nominee Anne Hathaway is attached to star as iconic performer Judy Garland in the film and stage adaptations of Gerald Clarke’s biography “GET HAPPY: THE LIFE OF JUDY GARLAND,” for which The Weinstein Company (TWC) has optioned the film and stage rights. The announcement was made today by Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of TWC.

“GET HAPPY,” based on hundreds of interviews plus Garland’s own unfinished and unpublished autobiography, portrays the dramatic highs and lows of the cultural icon’s life– from her tumultuous early years as a child performer to her tragic last days.

“We are thrilled to have the brilliantly talented Anne Hathaway portray stage and screen legend Judy Garland. I have worked with Anne on projects in the past and have known her for many years. She will be a true class act in this challenging role,” said Harvey Weinstein. “Gerald Clarke’s biography is a fascinating and comprehensive look at Garland’s life and is particularly outstanding because of its exclusive details from her own writings. Her story is incredible subject matter for both theatre and film and we look forward to bringing it to audiences.”

“GET HAPPY: THE LIFE OF JUDY GARLAND” was first published by Delta in March 2001.

‘Transformers 3′: 2012 or Michael Bay is not directing

Posted by Travis On March - 20 - 2009

A few days back we posted the planned release date for ‘Transformers 3′ which was 2011. However on the Shoot for the Edit forum the man himself Michael Bay posted this:

I said I was taking off a year from Transformers. Paramount made a mistake in dating Transformers 3 – they asked me on the phone – I said yes to July 4 – but for 2012 – whoops! Not 2011!!! That would mean I would have to start prep in September. No way. My brain needs a break from fighting robots.

Looks like we’ll be seeing ‘Transformers 3′ in 2012, really I hope the studio decides to wait. I really can’t imagine a third Transformers film without Michael Bay.

‘Transformers 3′ gets a date!

Posted by Travis On March - 17 - 2009

The second Transformers film, ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ is just about three months away but Paramount and Dreamworks are already at work planning the third Transformers installment.

The third film has been given the release date of July 1st 2011!

From Variety:

It’s the first word of the three-quel, although Paramount insiders downplayed the importance of the move.

They said the studio wanted to claim the date before a competitor did, considering that the 2011 summer release calendar is filling up.

No deals have been inked with director Michael Bay or franchise stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox. Nor has a writer been hired for the third installment.

The big-budget franchise has fast tried to claim the July Fourth holiday frame as its own. “Transformers” opened on July 3, 2007; “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” bows on June 24, 2009, one week before the holiday.
