Gore Verbinski set to direct ‘Clue’

Posted by Travis On February - 25 - 2009

Through a deal with Hasbro, Universal has acquired the rights to adapt several of the most popular board games in history including, ‘Monopoly’, ‘Candy Land’ and ‘Clue’ are among several others.

Risky Business Blog reports:

Universal is moving several spaces up the board with “Clue,” a big-screen take on the classic game, and is in final negotiations with “Pirates of the Caribbean” helmer Gore Verbinski to direct and produce.

The project comes as part of a partnership between Universal and Hasbro to develop iconic board games into movies. A number of other properties have big names attached to them, including “Candyland,” which has Kevin Lima attached to direct and Etan Cohen to write, and “Ouija Board,” which Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes is producing. And Ridley Scott is on board to produce “Monopoly.”

Gore Verbinski has proved himself a very capable and diverse director able to produce big box office numbers with films like ‘The Ring’ and the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films, so I’m interested to see how he’d handle this. But first, perhaps Bioshock?

Tell us what you think below.

Clue was already a movie so I can understand they are remaking it, and it makes sense for this game over others to be made into a movie, there is the murder twist factor. Are they serious about the others games? That would be terrible, or was that just a joke. No way can they really make board games now into movies. Unless Monopoly is the next Wall St or Boiler Room, don’t even bother.

Thanks for the comment Craig. I was actually a fan of the original ‘Clue’ film, despite it being both a critical and box office flop.

And no, that was not a joke you and you read it right! Who knows, I see potential for it but obviously these adaptions would have to have VERY little to do with the original game. For Monopoly, if anything, I see it being like a comedy version of ‘Wall Street’ and family friendly. Only time will tell though.
