Travis Reviews ‘Eagle Eye’

Posted by Travis On September - 29 - 2008

Over the weekend ‘Eagle Eye’ soared into spot #1 at the box office (heh heh it’s a pun), these numbers are despite a barrage of mostly negative reviews which seems to sum up how much audiences pay to critics these days…

After that opening paragraph I should know that nobody is going to read my review however if you are one of the few who still reads reviews allow me to sway you;

‘Eagle Eye’ stars Shia LaBeouf, Michelle Monaghan, Rosario Dawson, Billy Bob Thornton and Michael Chiklis, and is directed by D.J. Caruso.

‘Eagle Eye’ starts out in a fast paced yet cliché room of decision making, it’s a room we’ve seen in films like ‘Transformers’, and ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’, the one with all the feds making big decisions while watching the action through big screen TVs. In this room the Defense Secretary (Michael Chiklis) is trying to convince his colleagues not to bomb a funeral precession which may be attended by a high level terrorist. Defense Secretary advises against the bombing but they are in the minority. I found the whole scene a bit tedious and cliché however just when the scene became really tedious there was a big explosion and the title came up on screen ending the intro.

We are introduced to Jerry Shaw (Shia LaBeouf) who is involved in a heated poker game over his break, we quickly find that he does not work a glamourous, dangerous or particularly interesting job no he’s just a rep at ‘Copy Cabana’. After his shift he receives a call from his mom telling him that his brother just died. There is a funeral after-witch Jerry’s dad confronts him we get the classic “Why can’t you be more like your brother, you little Stanford dropout” scene.

Later Jerry returns to his job at Copy Cabana and life continues a usual, until Jerry goes deposit a check finds that he has $751,000 in his account, (weird right?), things get even stranger for Jerry when he enters his flat and finds bags and bags of ammonium nitrate along with other explosives, weapons, and manuals to air force jets. His phone rings “The FBI will arrive at your door in 20 seconds, run” Jerry does not heed the voice and is arrested in about 20 seconds when the FBI does in fact come.

Rachel Holloman (Michelle Monaghan) a young, single mom gets her son ready for a big recital in Washington DC where he will be playing for the president, she gives him a kiss and helps him board a train looking both worried and excited for her son. Shortly after he boards she receives a call from the same woman who called Jerry, the woman asks Rachel if she wants to see her son again then gives her instructions which, if not followed will result in the death of her son.

Agent Thomas Morgan (Billy Bob Thornton) interrogates Jerry, then, with clearance from the higher-ups agrees to give Jerry a phone call. However as opposed to making a phone call Jerry receives one, it’s the voice again telling him to duck. Jerry turns just in time to see a tower-crane coming towards the window (ok the chances of the crane being in the vicinity of the window are slim to none but it’s a fun scene none the less). The crane smashes the glass and Jerry jumps, and takes the train. While on the train Jerry receives another call giving him instructions of what to do next, the woman on the phone still does not reveal herself.

Jerry is told to walk to a parked Porsche Cayenne, he hops in and finds Rachel who he believes to be the woman on the phone the two fight a bit then realize they are both victims. However they still have feds chasing them and a woman threatening to kill Rachel’s son if she does not obey the two decide to take there chances with the woman and they hit the road, an awesome chase ensues with many a police car flying through the air incurring hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage it’s fun!

Jerry and Rachel embark on a faced paced and dangerous journey where they must obey a woman who follows there every move with uncanny vision while at the same time trying to uncover the woman, prove there innocence and come out alive.

‘Eagle Eye’ is fast and fun. True many coincidences aid the story telling, and there are more then a few parts that “the plausibles” will surely complain about. But this is a fun popcorn thriller, not a deep psychological study. When I walked into the theater expecting to have fun and be entertained for two hours and that’s exactly what I got. If your looking for a fun film to see go see ‘Eagle Eye’ if your looking for something deeper go see something else it’s as simple as that.

Rating: ★★★½☆

‘Valkyrie’ new trailer

Posted by Travis On September - 26 - 2008

A new trailer for ‘Valkyrie’ has hit the net. Watch it here! Since the release of the first teaser a little over a year ago there have been more then a few setbacks (the film was originally set for August of this past summer, then moved up to June then back to October then back to February 2009 then, to where where it presently sits, December 26 2008), but despite that, from the looks of this trailer, it looks like it’s going to be a great film.

“Valkyrie” is directed by Bryan Singer and is loosely biased on the July 20th Plot. Starring Tom Cruise as Col. Claus von Stauffenberg (pictured above in comparison) who with a small group of others plots the assignation of Adolph Hitler. The film also stars Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Stephen Fry, Terrence Stamp and Tom Wilkinson. As stated above it hits theaters December 26 still in time for awards season.

‘W.’ trailer

Posted by Travis On September - 25 - 2008

Lionsgate has just released the official theatrical trailer for Oliver Stone’s upcomming ‘W’, which stars Josh Brolin as W, Elizabeth Banks as Laura Bush, James Cromwell as George H Bush, Richard Dreyfuss as Dick Cheney, Thandie Newton as Condoleezza Rice, Jeffrey Wright as General Colin Powell, Toby Jones as Karl Rove, and Ellen Burstyn as Barbara Bush- yeah there’s a lot of talent in this picture! This trailer really does not show us anymore then the teaser released this summer but it’s a lot funnier.

Whatever your political views are there’s no denying the amount of talent involved with this film as well as the many conversations people will have while leaving the theater. Is this fair and balanced? And accurate portrayal of George W Bush? Oliver Stone said he was going for as much accuracy as possible, so is it, well from what we’ve seen so far there clearly going with the more comedic aspects of George Bush’s life however that does not mean that it’s not accurate. But who knows I guess we’ll see on 17 October 2008, which is when the film hits theaters in limited release (it will be opening in more theaters later in October).

Possible Unbreakable Sequel

Posted by Travis On September - 23 - 2008

Last week I heard a rumor about a possible Unbreakable sequel of corse I dismissed it as rumor and urban legend. However after reading this I’m not so sure. It’s not like it’s in production but at least there is a slight possibility and that’s exciting news!

Hear it is from the man himself;

I tell you I get asked about it all the time, so it’s not [an idea] I ever forget,” “I genuinely just asked this question the other day — should I make ‘Unbreakable 2’?”

-M. Night Shyamalan from his interview with MTV News

Unbreakable was original intended to be a trilogy (I once read that the three films were going to be called ‘Unbreakable’, ‘Unbeatable’ and ‘Unstoppable’ however I don’t know if that’s true). And you can tell at the end of Unbreakable that it would make a lot of since to have a sequel.

Samuel L. Jackson, from the same article on the possibility of a sequel;

“Back then we talked about what the rest would entail,” recalled Jackson. “I broke out of the mental institution. I’m out there doing stuff and ["Unbreakable" co-star Bruce Willis' "David Dunn" is] after me. It’s very cool. He still wears that rain thing, that windbreaker.”

‘Unbreakable’ is one of my favorite Shyamalan films, while I think ‘The Sixth Since’ may be my favorite as far as first time viewings go, I could watch ‘Unbreakable’ over and over again. And while it was not as popular as any of his other films; I also really, really liked ‘The Village’ as well.

Ahh! ‘Tintin’ what has become of you?!?

Posted by Travis On September - 20 - 2008

Huge news about the upcoming Tintin franchise which is to be helmed by Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson;  Universal pictures has denied funding for the film!  Yes you read that correctly, one of the worlds biggest movie companies has turned down financing for a film helmed by two of the worlds biggest directors!

Both Spielberg and Jackson have directed as well as produced some of the highest grossing, as well as innovative, films ever.  So for these guys to team up it’s automatically like a cinematic dream team. But alas Universal had something different in mind, now I don’t want to paint Universal as the bad guy. I can see where they are coming from while I’m sure any Spielberg, Jackson collaboration would bring in box office numbers in the high hundred millions if not breaking over a billion world-wide. It’s still a risk, the movie industry is risky and on this project ‘Tintin’ would have to take in over $425 million before Universal would even see a dime!

Bottom line- Tintin will get made if both Spielberg and Jackson want it to be, there’ll be a lot of haggling maybe some shopping (for a different financial backer) but trust me this project is far from dead this is just a set back, Paramount has already put up a substantial amount as well as Weta.

Dreamworks departs

Posted by Travis On September - 19 - 2008

Today it was announced that Dreamworks has completed a $1.2 billion deal with one of India’s biggest entertainment giants Reliance ADA Group. Reliance will invest $500 million per year along with another $700 million through J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. Dreamworks will be producing about 6 major films per year. Rumors have been floating around about this deal since the beginning of this past summer however until today nothing has been finalized.

Now that Dreamworks is no longer teamed with Paramount they have to find a new distributer for there films, it would seem that Universal Pictures is a first choice because of Steven Spielberg’s long and prosperous relationship with the company. It is also thought that HBO and Dreamworks will strike up a deal of some kind most likely for distribution of Dreamworks’s television shows.

David Geffen co-founder of Dreamworks who has worked for Paramount for the past two years will most likely quit Paramont and he is not expected to continue to work with Dreamworks either.

Quantum of Solace theme

The theme music from the new 007 film “Quantum of Solace” is now online. The music sounds good, however I’m not a fan of the vocals, as far as that goes I like “Casino Royal”’s theme a lot more.

After betrayal by Vesper, 007 tries to keep his newest assignment less personal. A mission which leads Bond to Italy, Australia and South America, and takes him to Dominic Greene a ruthless and powerful business man who is planning to take over an important natural recourse.

The film stars Daniel Craig (James Bond), Judi Dench (M), Gemma Arterton (Agent Fields), Olga Kurylenko (Camille), Jeffrey Wright (Felix Leiter) and Mathieu Amalric (Dominic Greene). ‘Quantum’ is directed by Marc Forster. In the UK, France and Sweden, the film opens on October 31st. It opens in North America on the 14th of November and the rest of the world over the next two months (click hear for more info).

A “Tomorrowland” movie?

Disney has just announced that they will be turning there popular attraction “Tomorrowland” into a movie! Tomorrowland is an area of the Disney resorts in which guests are shown the innovations of tomorrow along with what futurists think the future will be like. Since it was first constructed in 1955 Tomorrowland has been updated a few times to keep up with rapidly changing technology.

So a Tomorrowland movie, it worked for Pirates of the Caribbean! Disney has hired Jon Lucas and Scott Moore to write the high-budgeted “Tomorrowland” which Dwayne Johnson will star in.

On a side note, personally, I can see this working really well. I’m sure you may be reacting the same way I did when I first heard about it “A movie based on an attraction dedicated to technology and inovation?!?” but think about it there’s really a lot of places you can go with it story wise. I’m excited.
